Drain Flies/Fruit Flies
Drain flies and fruit flies are small, nuisance flies that breed inside properties. Drain flies breed in the organic film inside drainage pipes; fruit flies in overripe produce, spilled beverages, and bin areas. Both are rapid breeders and are a particular concern in commercial kitchens and food businesses.
SIGNS OF INFESTATION
- Small flies emerging from sink, shower, or floor drains,
- clusters of tiny flies around fruit bowls, bins, or bar areas,
- flies visible near any area of fermentation, spillage, or organic waste,
- larvae or pupae visible inside drain covers when inspected.
PREVENTION TIPS
- Pour boiling water or biological drain cleaner down drains weekly,
- keep all drains covered when not in use, store fruit in the refrigerator during warm months,
- clean and dry bar equipment and drip mats after each use,
- empty and clean bins daily in commercial food environments
